'Fast-Food' Options In Stresa

A reader wanted to know places that she could pick up 'fast food', that is, quick food to grab and eat on the go for her and her kids, without having to sit down in a restaurant. I had touched on the subject earlier in the summer, in this post, about the little take-away sandwich shop called Cicinin Panini al Metro.

Now, Stresa doesn't have any true fast-food restaurants. And the places where you can find just a bite of food to go are not always easily recognizable as such from the outside. But if you want to grab a sandwich to eat later, or a quick slice of pizza to bring to a bench, here are some ideas:

The just-mentioned Cicinin Panini al Metro. This easy-to-spot little shop is located at the entrance to Piazza Cadorna, where via P. Tomaso and via Roma meet. Here you can get little subway-style sandwiches, 10 cm each, as many as you like! Different fillings listed on the board, sodas and drinks too. If you have a few moments they have cute seating upstairs.

Restaurant: Ristorante Belvedere

When two dear friends visited Stresa this summer, their first time here, I took my own advice and showed them a 'Golden Day' in Stresa. Modified the version in the link a bit to suit our own needs, but we kept many elements. We began our day leisurely with cappuccini and brioche at Gigi Bar. Then, instead of taking the ferry, we made a very special day of it and hired a private water taxi for the day. We chose to do this so that we could make a little detour, a little bit more of our time on the lake and we did a drive-by (float-by?) of Santa Caterina del Sasso, stopping for as long as we wanted, and from as many angles as we wanted, to take photos. Then, back to Isola Bella, tour of the palace, walkabout all over the island. Our taxi came just moments after I placed the phone call for it, and brought us across the water to Isola dei Pescatori, where we had lunch plans. And THAT is what I want to tell you about today ... our lunch at Ristorante Belvedere

The above photo is from their own website, and shows the 'back' of the restaurant, taken from in the lake. Water taxis and the ferries make their stops on the other side of the island, so it's a bit busier, nosier, kiosk-filled on that side. But enter the restaurant from there and walk through, and it is like entering another world. I've been here before, and knew what to expect, but it was nice to see the pleasure on my friends' faces with their first look.

We arrived at the end of the lunch rush; the outdoor terrace, covered by a ceiling of umbrellas, was still fairly full. Having reserved, we were so fortunate to have a perfect table at the edge of the terrace. overlooking the lake. Service, from the moment we arrived, was fantastic. Attentive, friendly, elegant but never stuffy.

Walking: Excellent Trail Maps

With the start of autumn, cooler temperatures, and colorful foliage, I'm so happy that I was shown this link, on the CAI Stresa website, of the best maps I've ever seen for the official hiking and walking trails around this area.  CAI, Club Alpino Italiano, has, for more than 150 years now, promoted and organized all sorts of outdoor activities in the region, focusing primarily on trekking and cycling. The Stresa chapter is more than 60 years old.

Many visitors write asking about walking trails in Stresa. I've even been stopped on the streets and asked for directions to the beginning of the trails and for other trail information. I knew the basics, but these maps go far beyond the few trails I already knew. There are three maps, each giving a mid-aerial view of the hills, first over Stresa, and then over Baveno and Verbania. Here's Stresa:

Just For Fun

I've been meaning to share this photo for the longest time. Every time I am food shopping at Essalunga, one of the Italian supermarket chains, I stop and have a caffe there and see the large bowls with their own Essalunga sugar packets. They are decorated with these adorable Italian plays-on-words of famous names and foods.

Can you get them all?

Some are a bit of a stretch, and you need to use an Italian accent. For example, Banana Butterfly is, obviously, Madama Butterfly.  :-)

Have fun and enjoy your Sunday!

News: Little Bits Of News From Stresa

Just enough news to enjoy with your cappuccino...

In this addition of News Bites, we present information about a new hotel, an old garage, a small theater, and a big race. Enjoy!

Personally, I must say I am very happy for this news. A new hotel will be built in Stresa, between Hotel La Palma and Hotel des Iles Borromees, on a site that currently holds just an eyesore of overgrown ruins. It has taken more than two years of tense negotiations, but the Stresa Comune gave approval for the project recently, and hopefully works will begin before too long. The hotel will be the first new one to be built in Stresa since 1955, and it is expected to have a designation of 4 or 5 stars. It seems that two of the three old villas on the property, Mona Villa and Villa of San Basile Rizzo, may in fact be incorporated into the design, preserving them and also renovating them. To me, it's a win-win.
